An official ceremony to commemorate April 9, 1938 events was held Sunday at the Martyrs' Square in Sijoumi during which President of the Republic Béji Caid Essebsi laid a wreath at the memorial and recited the Fatiha in the memory of martyrs.

Attendees notably included Premier Youssef Chahed and Speaker of the House of People's Representatives Mohamed Ennaceur.

April 9, 1938 events marked a decisive phase in the struggle for national liberation and brought about far-reaching political changes that culminated in independence on March 20, 1956, and the proclamation of the republic on July 25, 1957.

Thousands of Protesters thronged Tunis to demand the creation of a Tunisian parliament and several leaders of the national liberation movement were arrested.
