On the celebration of International Women's Day, an inner Cabinet meeting chaired by Prime Minister Youssef Chahed, focused on the national strategy for the socio-economic empowerment of rural women and girls whose implementation is projected during the period 2017/2020.

The strategy was developed on the basis of a diagnosis of the cultural and socio-economic situation of rural women, according to a statement from the Prime Ministry.

The Cabinet meeting has adopted the main thrusts of the strategy, which include providing up-to-date information on the situation of women in rural areas in order to use them in development plans, to combat the drop-out of girls, reduce Illiteracy rates and promote the migration of women from the informal sector to the formal sector.

It also provides for combating violence against women, disseminating the culture of citizenship and strengthening the presence of women in decision-making positions.

According to the statement, a strategy will be implemented in a participatory and inclusive framework through the creation of appropriate mechanisms and the establishment of the necessary legal procedures in order to achieve the expected objectives.

The Cabinet meeting recommended implementing the annual action plan to carry out this strategy and to fine-tune the division of roles and responsibilities in order to ensure its success.

This strategy will serve as a unified national reference framework for the promotion of the conditions of women in rural areas, protection of social rights, integration into the economic circuit and facilitation of access to the services that can help them to enhance their activities and raise them to the rank of partners acting in regional and national development.
