(TAP) – The President of the Government Youssef Chahed stressed on Wednesday his government's readiness to develop basic infrastructure and expand existing legislation to reduce road accidents.

"This approach requires the promotion of technical means of road control and the assistance of civil society in raising awareness of good road behaviour," he said.

Speaking at the opening of the The 13th World Congress of Prévention Routière Internationale (PRI), Chahed said the government showed “audacity” in its approach to reform the road safety system.

He said that his Government encouraged scientific research in this field and called for updating data as well as means of accompanying road users such as signage and awareness-raising.

Mohamed Salah Arfaoui, Minister of Public Works, Housing and Spatial Planning.said that the majority of injured people in road accidents are between the ages of 15 and 44, adding that his department works to connect all regions to highways to reduce traffic on national roads and thereby reduce the risk of accidents.

According to The President of the Government, studies have shown that road infrastructure is not the only main cause of road accidents, but also the behaviour of some road users.

In this respect, He called on civil society and the Tunisian Road Safety Association (ATPR) to define a common plan jointly with the government and to implement it.

ATPR President Afif Frigui said that 3,000 young people will be mobilised as ambassadors of road safety, ensuring that the partnership between the association and the ministries of health, interior and transport will have a positive impact.

The 13th PRI World Congress is held for the first time in Tunisia, in the presence of representatives of 50 countries.

Several members of the Government and a host of ambassadors, consuls and other foreign guests attended the opening of the Congress.

Earlier, The President of the Government visited an exhibition devoted to road safety at Habib Bourguiba Avenue in the capital.
