Agriculture: Chahed announces creation of fund to compensate for damage caused by natural disasters

(TAP) – The President of the Government Yousef Chahed announced on Friday the implementation of the government's decision to create a solidarity fund to compensate for the damage caused by natural disasters.

Steps have been taken to set up a system of social insurance for fishermen and others are under way for the design of financing instruments, the organisation of its compensation fund operations, "He added during the celebration of the 53rd anniversary of Agricultural Evacuation and the National Day of Agriculture and Fisheries.

Chahed returned to the main challenges facing the agricultural sector, including debt, which affects a quarter of agricultural producers and the lack of an effective mechanism for natural disaster insurance.

Outlets for rural women, workers in agriculture

As regards the promotion of women workers in agriculture, whose participation in the sector is estimated at 70%, he announced the launch of outlets selling products of rural women in different regions of the country.

Besides, he recalled that the volume of public investment dedicated to the agricultural sector during the five-year period 2016-2020 is estimated at 9,000 million dinars (MD), an increase of 55% compared to the previous five-year period.

For his part, Minister of Agriculture, Water Resources and Fisheries, Samir Taieb called for the organisation of a national dialogue, with a view to setting up a global strategy for the promotion of the agricultural sector.

President of the Tunisian Union of Fishery and Agriculture (UTAP), Abdelmajid Ezzar said that "the new investment law is no longer effective in the absence of a genuine political will to fight against anarchic import and Smuggling ".

He also reiterated his call to give back to farmers, fishermen and the sector in general the place they deserve.
