(TAP) - The President of the Government Youssef Chahed paid a visit Wednesday to the port of Radés during which he learnt about the various operations of unloading and loading containers and scanning operations.

Chahed, who was accompanied by the Transport Minister and the Tunisian Customs Director, toured the various parts of the port which accounts for about 70% of Tunisia's foreign trade.

The PG voiced "dissatisfaction" at the activities of the scanner container control unit within the port and criticised the slowness of a number of customs operations, in addition to the professional situations of a number of executives and workers. He called on officials "to take the necessary steps and find solutions to avoid these situations."

Besides, he inspected a number of storage spaces and enquired about the control operations of some goods imported inside containers that are subject to careful inspection. Chahed also inspected the storage and customs landfill operations.

Furthermore, the premier visited the headquarters of the border office of trade operations in the port of Radés and familiarised with the progress of the various administrative operations of import and export companies and individuals.

During his visit, he listened to the concerns and grievances of the port's partners (private carriers, customs intermediaries, citizens).

Transport Minister Anis Ghedira had said on May 26, 2017, that an automatic management system will be installed in the trailers and mechanisms to ensure the movement of containers at the port of Radés before the end of 2017.

The port of Radés handles 450 thousand containers every year and houses 150 thousand trailers. Its capacity is seven thousand containers and this number is expected to rise to 700 thousand containers annually thanks to the adoption of the new system.
