"Tunisia is at the forefront of the war proclaimed against terrorism and extremism," he stressed.

Speaking at his meeting with the US Department of Defence (The Pentagon), with US Secretary of Defence James Mattis, the Prime Minister said "as a major non-NATO ally, Tunisia is totally involved in this war."

"The Tunisian security and military units have been very successful against terrorist groups thanks in particular to international cooperation," the Prime Minister said.

In this connection, Youssef Chahed spoke of Tunisia's readiness to work to intensify and further develop security and military cooperation with the United States given the common interest of both countries in eradicating terrorism and fostering peace and security in the region and in the world.

For his part, the US Secretary of Defence commended Tunisia's unconditional commitment in the war on terrorism and its involvement as an active partner in the fight against Daech.

He also praised the efforts made by Tunisia in the fight against corruption and, in particular, smuggling, which is one of the main sources of financing for terrorism.

In this regard, James Mattis reaffirmed the readiness of the United States to further strengthen its military and security cooperation with Tunisia and to continue supporting its democratic transition process
