(TAP) – International co-operation is the sole bastion against illegal immigration, Interior Minister Hedi Majdoub said Monday in Tunis.

Speaking during the 2nd meeting of the Interior Ministers of the Contact Group on The Mediterranean Migration Route, he pointed out that no country in the world can tackle on its own the illegal immigration phenomenon and its impacts, calling on European countries to contribute to the efforts made against the infiltration of individuals and illegal immigration through the implementation of social, economic and cultural integration programmes for the emigrants.

“The support provided by the European Union for training, employment and development will help curb the migration flows,” he added.

In turn, The President of the Government Youssef Chahed highlighted the “strong” link between illegal immigration and the spread of terrorism, extremism and organised and cross-border crime phenomenon.

He added that his cabinet is currently working on developing a national strategy to promote legal migration of Tunisians. This is even more necessary as Tunisians abroad are significantly contributing to the national development effort.

Chahed further highlighted Tunisia’s firm commitment to counter illegal immigration, calling in this respect to promote an efficient and comprehensive co-operation so as to avoid the illegal immigration’s dramatic consequences and protect the emigrants’ lives.”
