(TAP) - The President of the Government Youssef Chahed said he accepted the resignation of Minister of Development, Investment and International Co-operation and interim Minister of Finance Fadhel Abdelkefi.

He also told reporters Friday at the government palace in Kasbah he tasked Abdelkefi with continuing to run the two departments till new ministers are appointed, hailing his efforts in both ministries.

Chahed indicated that Abdelkefi Friday handed his resignation from the National Unity Government “after finding out that he was sentenced in absentia in 2014.” He expressed, in this vein, appreciation for the minister’s decision to appear before the court outside the government framework. This fits in with the National Unity Government’s vision of democratic traditions of the Second Republic, he underscored.

Abdelkefi earlier told private Mosaique FM radio station he had tendered his resignation as minister of development, investment and international co-operation and interim minister of finance to the Prime Minister. The move comes as he is due to appear on September 4 in court after an action was brought against him by the Directorate- General for Customs over financial transactions of the firm of which he is the legal representative.

Fadhel Abdelkefi lodged last August 10 an appeal against the court ruling after he was handed a prison sentence and ordered to pay a fine of 1.800 MTD.
