(TAP) – The President of the Government Youssef Chahed held a meeting with Prime Minister of Burkina Faso, Paul Kaba Thiéba, on Wednesday in Dar Dhiafa in Carthage, on the eve of the Africa 2017 Meetings (October 5 and 6 in Gammarth).

Speaking to reporters after the meeting, Chahed said "the visit of the Burkinabe prime minister is a very important opportunity to foster the ties of fraternity and co-operation between Tunisia and Burkina Faso which date to nearly 53 years ago.”

He noted that "this visit is part of strengthening bilateral co-operation in various fields including health, higher education, vocational training ... This cooperation can also extend to other sectors such as social housing".

Chahed also recalled the establishment in 2016 of a high joint commission whose role is to frame bilateral relations, as well as the visit made by senior Burkinabe officials in Tunisia last summer.

In this regard, he considered that "the framework is now conducive to co-operation between the two countries. Indeed, Burkina Faso nationals do not need a visa to travel to Tunisia and vice versa.

In addition, an air route already exists between the two countries, with a frequency of 3 flights per week. Tunisia had also inaugurated a new embassy in Burkina Faso last April.

The Prime Minister said “the private sector must also play its role in expanding co-operation between the two countries through the exchange of experience at the technical level and through the implementation of joint projects".

He added that "the participation in the Africa 2017 meetings, attended by more than 650 companies, will give a fresh dynamic to relations between the two countries and reaffirm the determination of the national unity government to unleash a new momentum with the African continent".

For his part, Burkina Faso’s Prime Minister Paul Kaba Thiéba stressed the importance of the Africa 2017 meetings, saying he "had a working session with the Prime Minister on co-operation between the two countries. It is a fraternal, old and very promising cooperation".

"We have made great strides in terms of co-operation in all areas; today's meeting has enabled us to take stock of the most important issues and we have seen that our countries are facing similar problems", he pointed out.

He added: "with regard to bilateral co-operation, we have agreed to accelerate partnership in several areas such as health, education, vocational training, banking, infrastructure, housing..."

The 2nd edition of the "Rencontres Africa 2017" (October 5 to 6, 2017) will be inaugurated on Thursday October 5, 2017 by Prime Minister Youssef Chahed and French Prime Minister Édouard Philippe who will be accompanied by several secretaries of state and a delegation of one thirty French companies, SMEs and large groups.

In addition to the African and French delegations, Moroccan, Algerian, Egyptian and Libyan partners have been also invited to the event, which will bring together institutions, ministries, employers’ organisations and chambers of commerce which are called to set up a steering committee.
