(TAP) – President Béji Caïd Essebsi presided, on Sunday in Bizerte, over a ceremony on the occasion of the commemoration of the 54th anniversary of the Evacuation Day in an atmosphere of meditation in memory of the martyrs who sacrificed themselves until the last foreign soldier had evacuated the Tunisian territory.

In the square of the martyrs, the Head of State saluted the national flag as the national anthem was being performed and reviewed an honorary formation of the three armies before laying a wreath of flowers at the foot of the martyrs' monument and recited the Fatiha to their memory.

The ceremony took place in the presence of The President of the Government Youssef Chahed, Speaker of the House of People’s Representatives Mohamed Ennaceur and members of the government as well as deputies from the Bizerte region to the HPR and regional executives.

National officials and the presidents of several political parties and national organisations attended the ceremony, which was also marked by the presence of representatives of civil society and citizens.

The Evacuation Day marks the departure, on October 15, 1963 of the French troops from the Bizerte base.

It is celebrated each year to pay homage to hundreds of Tunisian martyrs who fell during the Battle of Bizerte (19-23 July 1961), mostly civilians, who had opposed the French army for four days to the nascent one from Tunisia.
