(TAP) - Municipal elections will be held on scheduled date and will not be postponed like some parties argue, Prime Minister Youssef Chahed said on Wednesday.

Visiting Wednesday Independent High Authority for Elections (ISIE)’s section in the district of Tunis 1 at the Kasbah, Youssef Chahed added that the opening of nominations for the municipal elections on Thursday is an important event for Tunisia and marks a crucial step towards the completion of the electoral process.

He called on Tunisians to flock to the polls on May 6, the date set for the municipal elections, saying it will be a starting point for strengthening decentralisation as laid down in the constitution.

The Prime Minister said he was aware of Tunisians' disinterest in political action, stressing the role of parties and civil society in encouraging citizens to participate in this important event.

The government has made every effort to provide proper conditions for the success of this election, he stressed.

Youssef Chahed inquired, on the occasion, of the preparations of the ISIE at the logistical and human resources level before the opening Thursday of the nominations for the municipal elections that will continue until February 22.

President of the ISIE Mohamed Tlili Mansri and several members of the election commission provided clarifications to the prime minister on the documents needed for the submission of nominations
