(TAP Special correspondent Sofien Manai) – The Deep and Comprehensive Free Trade Agreement (DCFTA) between Tunisia and the European Union (EU) will be inked in 2019, Prime Minister Youssef Chahed announced on Tuesday in Brussels.

“This file is of vital importance, most particularly at the national level,” he said at the end of his meeting with European Commission President Jean-Claude Juncker.

“Negotiations between Tunisia and the EU regarding this agreement kicked off in 2015. Its implementation will be carried out gradually,” Chahed explained during a joint press conference with Juncker.

According to him, “this agreement is very delicate and its implementation must be carried out step by step as EU countries and Tunisia are not at the same level of development.”

“We do not stand on equal footing as we face economic challenges,” he added.

In this regard, Chahed deemed it necessary to define the main aspects of this agreement and identify its underlying principles.

The PM is paying a four-day working visit (April 23-27) to the Benelux countries (Belgium, Netherlands and Luxembourg).
