(TAP) – "Tunisia's experience of inter-religious coexistence is a message of love and peace to the whole world," Prime Minister Youssef Chahed said Wednesday on the first day of the annual Ghriba Jewish pilgrimage held on May 2nd and 3rd, 2018 Djerba island.

"Resolutely committed to continue this experience, this country of three thousand years of civilisation and history will always remain open to others," he told media.

"The government has invested a lot in the security of the country and managed to reap the benefits," he said, asserting that "Tunisia is a safe tourist country."

"The Ghriba visit is a strong indicator of the success of the tourist season," said Minister of Tourism and Handicrafts Selma Elloumi Rekik who affirmed that the annual Jewish pilgrimage of the Ghriba offers a renewed opportunity to consecrate the principles of tolerance and coexistence among religions.

"The Tunisian people are entitled to be proud of this religious diversity and inter-religious coexistence," said U.S. ambassador in Tunis, Daniel Robinson who was present at the opening of this event.

On the first day of the annual Ghriba Jewish pilgrimage, at least two thousand visitors came to perform the rites of the Ziara, a figure which is set to reach five thousand by the second day of this annual event, an increase of two thousand visitors per year, compared to the previous year, explained president of the Ghriba Association Peres Trabelsi.

"On the second day of the pilgrimage, several personalities will join the synagogue of Ghriba," he said.

According to him, they include the chief Rabbi of Moscow, the chief Rabbi of London and the chief Rabbi of Paris.

"This large affluence can only demonstrate the success of the Ghriba to reclaim its aura of yesteryear," he said, noting that this success is mainly due to the climate of peace and stability prevailing in the country
