(TAP) – "The economic indicators recorded are a proof of the improvement of the economic situation in Tunisia, during this last period" said Wednesday in Tunis, Prime Minister Youssef Chahed, assuring that "we are on the right track" .

At the opening of the economic forum on "economic policies and the challenges of scarcity of resources, Prime Minister said that some criticism of government action, are devoid of objectivity.

According to him, the government managed to meet its commitments, announced in the vote of confidence (August 2016), particularly with regard to the improvement of economic indicators, given that the growth rate has reached 2, 5%, in the first quarter of 2018, compared with 0.6% in the second quarter of 2016, and growth is expected to be around 3% for the second quarter of 2018.

Similarly, he added, tourist receipts in dinars have evolved by 40% (30% in dollars and 20% in euros), with an increase of 1 million tourists, compared to 2016 and 2017.

He also reported on the drop in the unemployment rate of two-point among the higher education graduates and the improvement in investment, trade balance and export, pointing out that 2018 is the best export year since 2008.

However, he admitted that the situation is difficult, especially with the continued rise in the inflation rate and the deterioration of the dinar exchange rate, saying "it is natural that the reforms and measures taken have a temporary negative impact on a number of indicators ".

"The difficult measures, especially those taken under the two 2017 and 2018 Finance Acts, are temporary, but they are still necessary to save public finances," he said.

He also affirmed the imperative of focusing efforts currently on investment, the creation of jobs, and the pursuit of reforms in public finances, social funds and public enterprises, placing emphasis on the role that civil society and economic and social operators can play in addressing these challenges.
