(TAP) - President Beji Caid Essebsi chaired Monday in Bizerte a ceremony on the occasion of the commemoration of the 55th anniversary of the Evacuation Day.

At the martyrs’ square, the Head of State saluted the flag while the national anthem was being performed, before reviewing a detachment of the three armies paying him honours.

He then laid a wreath at the foot of the martyrs' memorial and recited the Fatiha (first verses of the Quran) in their memory.

The ceremony was attended by Speaker of the House of People's Representatives Mohamed Ennaceur, Prime Minister Youssef Chahed, Governor of Bizerte Mohamed Guider, government members, representatives of political parties and MPs.

The Evacuation Day on October 15, 1963, marks the departure of the last French soldier from the Tunisian territory. It is celebrated every year to pay tribute to hundreds of Tunisian martyrs who fell during the Battle of Bizerte (July 19-23, 1961) that opposed for four days the French and Tunisian armies.
