29.5% of Tunisians prefer to consume local product

(TAP) - Only 29.5% of Tunisians prefer to consume local product and 8% know the Tunisian registered trademark (619), Director General of the National Institute of Consumption (INC) Tarek Ben Jazia said on Thursday.

Speaking at an event held by the Consumer Defence Organisation (OCD) to celebrate the 30th anniversary of its creation under the slogan “Consume Tunisian”, in the presence of Prime Minister Youssef Chahed and representatives of professional organisation, the official called on manufacturers to work to improve the quality of the Tunisian product.

The goal is to restore trust between consumers and the local product, he said.

Slim Saadallah, President of the ODC, for his part, said the organisation will continue, throughout the year, its awareness campaign to encourage and root the culture of "consuming the local product."

"We are moving towards a new economic policy based on partnership with the productive sectors, such as textiles, agriculture and other sectors," said Prime Minister Youssef Chahed.

He added that the slogan "consume Tunisian" must be translated on the ground, recalling, in this context, that the current economic situation requires the implementation of appropriate plans and policies.

Vice President of the Tunisian Confederation of Industry, Trade and Handicrafts (UTICA) Hamadi Kooli called on the government to reduce value-added tax (VAT) and make decisions about the shadow economy, which accounts for 50 percent of the economy.

As for Tunisian companies, Kooli urged improving product quality
