(TAP) – Prime Minister Youssef Chahed received on Friday at the Dar Dhiafa Palace in Carthage, former U.S. Secretary of State and President of the National Democratic Institute (NDI) Madeleine Albright.

Albright was quoted as saying in a Prime Ministry press release that her meeting with Youssef Chahed was “exceptionally good,” adding that it had focused on the democratic process in Tunisia and the importance of the forthcoming elections.

Albright affirmed NDI’s willingness to support Tunisia politically and economically and commitment to continue to support this experience.

As regards the choice of Tunisia to host the meeting of the NDI Board of Directors, she said: “We felt that Tunisia was exceptionally important to come to because of the newness of its democracy, the work of the people and the regional aspect.”

Albright is leading a 19-people delegation to the annual meeting of the NDI's board of directors, June 19-21 in Tunis.

The NDI is a non-profit, non-partisan organisation working to support and strengthen democratic institutions worldwide through citizen participation, openness and accountability in government.
