(TAP) – Prime Minister Youssef Chahed, stressed on Tuesday that the next government is called upon "to put the agriculture sector at the forefront of its priorities and to put the farmer at the heart of agricultural policy in order to improve his income".

At the opening of the 14th edition of the International Exhibition of Agriculture, Agricultural Machinery and Fisheries (SIAMAP 2019) at the Kram Exhibition Centre (northern suburb of Tunis), Chahed considered it necessary to ensure consistency between the agricultural and trade policies implemented by the country, in order not to harm local production.

For his part, President of the Tunisian Union of Agriculture and Fisheries (UTAP), Abdelmajid Zar, said that political will has not given Tunisian agriculture the place it deserves, adding that the State has not allocated sufficient amounts for the promotion of agriculture, which must represent a pillar of the national economy.

He also said that the olive harvest will be good this season, as is the case for the date sector or the fishing industry. These sectors can increase their contribution to the state budget to 15%, which clearly shows that "agriculture is the solution".

For her part, President of the organizing committee of the Fair, Ines Naggara, identified the participation of 550 exhibitors in the current edition of SIAMAP and the presence of foreign delegations made up of a number of businessmen from Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Italy and France in order to establish partnerships for investment and trade in the field of agriculture.

She pointed out that the exhibition includes scientific workshops (30 meetings) with the aim of developing the agricultural sector, recalling that visitors will be present on Wednesday 25 September with competitions (equestrian, heifer and domestic animal).

36 countries are taking part in SIAMAP 2019, which is being held from September 24 to 29, 2019 under the theme "agriculture is the solution", hosting several exhibitors over a total area of more than 25 thousand m2. The number of visitors expected for this edition amounts to 250 thousand people.
