February12, 2011 - TAP - Following the announcement of the final results of the referendum on self-determination of Southern Sudan, in which a large majority of the population expressed will to secede from the Republic of Sudan and establish an independent State, the Tunisian Government said "it respects the free choice of the people of Southern Sudan."
Tunisia's Government expressed its hope to see "the legitimate aspirations (of this people) to build their independent State and achieve stability and development be materialized," said a communiqué from the Foreign Ministry released on Saturday and received by TAP.
It welcomes "the constructive and positive attitude of the Government of the Republic of Sudan which expressed unequivocally its respect and acceptance of the referendum results and expressed the determination to establish privileged relations of co-operation and good neighbourhood with Southern Sudan to enhance stability in the African continent," added the communiqué.
