Mr. W.J. Burns : We have great faith in Tunisians' capacity to succeed

February 23, 2011 - TAP - Prime Minister Mohamed Ghannouchi received, on Wednesday February 23, 2011 afternoon in Tunis, American Under-Secretary of State for Political Affairs William J. Burns.
Following the meeting, the American diplomat made a statement to Tunis Afrique Presse (TAP) news agency in which he expressed "his very great personal delight" to be back once more in Tunisia, a country which he had had "the pleasure to visit several times in the past".
He underlined that "the present moment is one of extraordinary promises for Tunisians who can take great pride with the Revolution".
In this connection, he reminded, the laudatory terms that President Obama himself had used, in his last state of the Union address, to describe the Revolution which he depicted as "a source of inspiration".
Mr. Burns added that Tunisians sparked off this wave of freedom, of democracy and of dignity which is make progress across the whole region, and "nobody will ever forget that this wave started in Tunisia".
The American under-Secretary of State for Political Affairs underlined that "the road will not necessarily be easy", and that transitions of this kind could sometimes be difficult.
He reminded that the United States, as a partner of Tunisia, is determined to bring all the possible contribution. "We have great faith in the capacity of Tunisians to succeed", he said.
Besides, the American under-Secretary for Political Affairs described as excellent the talk he had with the Prime Minister.
He said that the meeting provided the opportunity to discuss ways and means to work together "to support the Tunisians in their very important undertaking."
The meeting was attended by Regional and Local Development Minister Ahmed Nejib Chebbi, Minister of Planning and International Co-operation Mohamed Nouri Jouini, as well as ambassador of the United States in Tunis Gordon Gray.
