EU to triple aid to meet humanitarian crisis in Libya

March. 4, 2011 -TAP - The European Union will triple its aid to meet humanitarian needs on Tunisian-Libyan borders, announced Mrs Kristalina Georgieva, European Commissioner in charge of International Cooperation, Humanitarian Aid and Reaction to Crises, when visiting the Tunisian-Libyan border post with Mrs Eniko Gyori,Hungarian Minister in charge of European affairs.
«The commission is tripling the aid allocated previously and worth 10 million euros to meet humanitarian needs», she said.
Mrs Kristalina Georgieva and Mrs Eniko Gyori urged member states to increase efforts to provide emergency aid to the refugees stranded and ease their repatriation.
Beyond the support to evacuation, the European funds will also be used to meet urgent needs of people crossing into Tunisia so as to provide them with tents, food, blankets and medical care.
