HCR and IOM hail Tunisians' solidarity with refugees at Libyan border

March. 8, 2011  - TAP  - Foreign Minister Mouldi Kéfi received here on Tuesday UN High Commissioner for Refugees (HCR) Antonio Gutterres and Director General of the International Organization for Migration (IOM) William Lacy Swing.
The Minister hailed the sustained support provided by Gutterres to Tunisia, especially after the revolution, voicing satisfaction at the efforts of the HRC to settle the problems of refugees in the world.
He also expressed Tunisia's gratitude to the IOM for its substantial aid in managing the flow of refugees at the Tunisian-Libyan border.
The FM highlighted the policy of the Interim Government in matters of refugees' protection and the importance given to the values of humanity, solidarity and mutual aid, expressing Tunisia's will to develop cooperation with the HCR and the IOM through practical plans for the benefit of humanitarian causes.
At the end of the meeting, the HCR and IOM Officials expressed satisfaction at "the remarkable solidarity, support and generosity of Tunisia's people and Government towards migrants who fled Libya".
"We have come to extend thanks to the Tunisian people and Government for allowing the opening of the Tunisian-Libyan border for migrants fleeing Libya to cross into Tunisia and for providing them with the necessary aid and protection", they said.
Furthermore, they voiced will to further reinforce cooperation with Tunisia in this difficult situation.
Gutterres and Lacy Swing hailed as well the efforts made in Tunisia to allow the evacuation of tens of thousands Asian, Egyptian and African nationals.
The joint action of International Organizations with the support of the International Community should allow to complete a programme to evacuate some 15 000 people stranded at the Tunisian-Libyan border, they added.
