Interim President receives delegation of international lawyers associations

March 11, 2011 - TAP - Interim President Foued Mebazaa received, on Friday March 11, 2011 in Carthage, a delegation of representative of international lawyers associations on a visit to Tunisia.
After the meeting, Chairman of the "Union Internationale des Avocats" (UIA) Pascal Maurer said he had discussed with the Interim President the process of democratisation in Tunisia and reforms to be decided at the level of the judiciary and independence of the judicial system as well as training of judges and lawyers.
UIA is founding member of the Sweden-based International Legal Assistance Consortium (ILAC) which includes 45 international lawyers associations in the world and whose essential task is to contribute to resurrect judicial systems in post-conflict countries, he said.
"We provide judicial systems under reconstruction with the expertise of lawyers, judges and professors of law in view of the legislative modifications that will be made", said the chairman of UIA.
He said that "this first meeting with the Tunisian officials provided the opportunity to establish a mode of collaboration which will make it possible to contribute to this extraordinary movement triggered in Tunisia".
Next to Mr. Maurer, the delegation was composed of Director General of the International Legal Assistance Consortium Christian Ahlund, Director for the American Bar Association Rule of Law Initiative- North Africa and Middle East Division Paul Simonett and Deputy Director of National and Regional Activities at UIA Ridha Saïm.
The talk was attended by the Secretary of State to the Prime Minister Ridha Belhaj and the President of the Bar of Tunisia Abderrazek Kilani.
