March 14, 2011 - TAP - Interim President Foued Mebazaa received, on Monday afternoon in Carthage, a delegation of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Mediterranean (PAM), made up of Mr. Rudy Salles, Honorary President of the Assembly, Mrs. Askin Asan, Vice-President and chairwoman of the Committee for Dialogue of Cultures and Religions, and Mr. Sergio Piazzi, PAM Secretary-General.
Mr. Foued Mebazaa briefed his guests on the current political situation and democratic changes in Tunisia, after the January 14 Revolution.
In a statement to TAP news agency, Mr. Rudy Salles said the Tunisian Revolution was a historic event which had surprised all observers, adding that PAM was closely following the democratic development in Tunisia, which is PAM member.
He reiterated PAM's support to the democratic process in Tunisia and the spirit of openness marking it. He pointed out that Tunisia's contribution to PAM has always been "valuable and very meaningful".
Mr. Rudy Salles expressed PAM's willingness to assist Tunisia in its democratic transition, in co-operation with the Inter-Parliamentary Union, particularly by monitoring the next elections and supporting Tunisia at the political, institutional and economic levels.
He lauded, in this context, "the wisdom of Tunisians who have chosen to elect a National Constituent Assembly next July 24".
