March 29, 2011 -TAP - Belgian Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs and Institutional Reform Steven Vanackere has denied the rumours that ousted President Zine El Abidine Ben Ali was seeking political asylum in Belgium.
These rumours are groundless "Vanackere told the media at the end of the meeting he had here on Monday with Interim Prime Minister Béji Caïd Essebsi.
On the other hand, he said that his visit in Tunisia is part of his country's care to look at means to back up Tunisia in this transitional period at political and economic levels.
As regards Tunisia's access to the status of advanced partner of the EU, the Belgian official revealed that the negotiations started to this end in 2005 had been fruitless, due to the controversy on Human Rights and liberties in Tunisia”.
“The situation has considerably improved in Tunisia after the Revolution, out of common belief in universal values of Human Rights and liberties” he said, stressing that “a final decision on this issue will be made after the holding of free and fair elections in Tunisia”.
