April 14, 2011 - TAP - "Tunisian media have high-level professionals but, simply, they did not have the opportunity to work under the former regime," Mrs. Virginie Jouan, member of the International Freedom of Expression Exchange Tunisia Monitoring Group (IFEX-TMG), said.
At the end of the meeting held on Thursday with Caretaker Prime Minister Béji Caïd Essebsi, Mrs. Jouan specified that "the current circumstances are fundamentally different and will help Tunisian media start a new era and fully play their role in informing the citizens and establishing a public debate before next July 24 elections."
She added that her talk with the Prime Minister had turned on the role of the Tunisian media in this transitional stage and on means to reinforce freedom of expression and media in Tunisia.
Besides, Mrs. Virginie Jouan pointed out that she had had meetings in the past week with journalists, owners of newspapers, radios and televisions, advocates of freedom of speech and human rights, judges and lawyers.
Based in Toronto, Canada, IFEX counts over 80 independent media organisations.
