April 18, 2011 - TAP - Articles 15 and 16 of the draft electoral law pertaining to candidacy to the National Constituent Assembly's elections and the principle of gender parity were the focus of the meeting held, on Monday in Tunis, between the Interim PM Béji Caïd Essebsi and Council members of the High Authority for the Achievement of the Revolution Objectives, Political Reforms and Democratic Transition.
In a statement to Tunis-Afrique Presse (TAP) News Agency after the meeting, Mr. Chokri Belaïd, member of the High Authority, said on banning those persons who had assumed responsibilities within the dissolved Constitutional Democratic Rally for running for the Constitutional Assembly, that those people had been implicated in the former regime's errors.
He further explained that "it wouldn't be reasonable to allow those who had been members of the dissolved RCD Politburo, its Central Committee and co-ordination committees to run for these elections."
In turn, Chairman of the Tunisian Human Rights Defence League and High Authority member Mokhtar Trifi told TAP that exclusion of former Constitutional Democrats was a people's demand; it "responds to the public opinion's will". He added that the decision "is the product of a consensus arrived at among all Council members and the High Authority for the Achievement of the Revolution Objectives".
He pointed out that the present stage required breaking off with twenty-three years of tyranny and despotism. He specified that the High Authority would establish, during the coming period, a list of those people to be banned from running for the National Constituent Assembly.
