EU opens regional office of IMP-MED project in Tunis

May 3, 2011 – TAP  - The regional office of the EuroMed Regional Transport Project-Integrated Maritime Policy (IMP-MED), funded by the European Union up to 1.5 million euros (1 euro= 1,997 dinar), opened last April 1 in Tunis.
The office will serve as a co-ordinating point for all activities of the IMP-MED project which aims to boost an integrated approach to maritime issues in the Mediterranean.
The project is carried out by a consortium of European offices led by WS Atkins Group whose main task is to bring support to States concerned by the development of a national integrated maritime policy.
IMP-MED aims to improve the governance of maritime businesses in the Mediterranean and establish a consensual framework in this regard, in collaboration with 9 partner countries, located in the Southern bank and East of the Mediterranean (Morocco, Algeria, Tunisia, Egypt, Jordan, Lebanon, Palestinian territories, Israel and Syria).
Tunisia took part in the first regional meeting IMP-MED held on April 5-6 in Athens.
During this meeting, parties involved in the project (EU and 9 Mediterranean countries), sought to identify the specific needs of each country related to the new (IMP-MED).
The EU provides to partner countries as part of this project, tools covering several areas for an integrated maritime governance, particularly in matters of planning of the maritime space and marine strategies, scientific research as well as integrated monitoring.
