May 25, 2011 - TAP - Former Secretary General of the French Socialist Party (PS) and candidate for the primary election François Hollande said Tunisia can only be "a successful democratic model because it was the first to engage in a democratic process".
Received, on Wednesday, by Interim Prime Minister Béji Caïd Essebsi, Mr. Hollande stressed France's willingness to support Tunisia and ensure success to its democratic experience.
He said that his meeting with the Prime Minister had provided the opportunity to review the process of democratic transition in Tunisia.
"Democracy requires the establishment of the best possible economic and social environment, particularly in a country that has not traditions in this area," he says, arguing that "this heavy responsibility falls on the international community".
The meeting had also made it possible to express the Interim Government's will to hold the elections next July 24 in the best conditions, he added.
"The most important event now is the G8 Summit to be held on Friday in Deauville" he pointed out. A detailed support plan to be provided to Tunisia will be established to help the country overcome the economic and social difficulties in a delicate regional environment due to the situation of refugees at the Libyan border and the problem of unemployment.
Mr. Hollande described as "cautions" the attitude of France on the issue of Tunisian illegal immigrants at a time when Tunisia has shown that it was open to host thousands of refugees on its border".
The meeting was attended by Delegate Minister to the Prime Minister Rafaa Ben Achour.
