Interim Prime Minister confers with UN Women Executive Director

June 16, 2011 - TAP - Caretaker Prime Minister Béji Caid Essebsi conferred, on Thursday in Tunis, with United Nations Deputy Secretary-General and UN Women Executive Director Michelle Bachelet.
After the meeting, Mrs. Bachelet told TAP she came to Tunisia on behalf of the UN Women and also on behalf of the United Nations system to congratulate the Tunisia's Interim Government on its efforts to ensure success of democratic transition and the progress made to lay down the foundations of an open, transparent and fair system.
The UN Deputy Secretary-General said the United Nations system will continue supporting the Tunisian government's efforts and contribute actively through UN Women, which is a "UN organisation for gender equality and women's empowerment," to identify new co-operation sectors likely to back up the women's economic and political empowerment.
Mrs. Michelle Bachelet will participate on Friday in Tunis in an international conference to be held by the Tunisian Women Democrats Association (ATFD) on: "Women and Democratic Transition".
