April 25, 2012 - TAP - Ministerial Working sessions, held on April 24-25 in Tunis, were devoted to the examination of a bill pertaining to the National Independent Authority for the Elections (NIAE).

This draft law is part of Article 24 of the Constitutive Act providing for the interim organization of public powers and the creation of a permanent independent authority in charge of organizing and overseeing the elections and the referendums, points out a Prime Ministry's communiqué.

This bill provides for the creation of an independent and permanent authority for the elections, while endowing it with the attributes of the legal administrative and financial autonomy, in such a manner as to help it fulfill its missions in accordance with the principles of neutrality, competence and transparency.

The communiqué specifies that drafting the bill draws inspiration from the recommendations issued by the High Independent Authority for the Elections and in its report on the progress of the National Constituent Assembly elections, a document published last February, as well as the successful foreign experiences in matters of independent oversight of elections.
