04 March 2016 - TAP - The European Investment Bank (EIB) will further support Tunisia at both financial and technical levels in the next period,” President of this institution Werner Hoyer said at a meeting Friday in Luxembourg with Prime Minister Habib Essid.

The EIB official added that his institution will “endeavour more than over to support the economic and social transition process in Tunisia.”

The meeting, held in the presence of Vice-President of EIB Roman Escolano, discussed the development of the relations between Tunisia and this institution as well as ways to strengthen them, said a Prime Ministry statement.

Speaking of the success of the democratic transition process, Essid called for the need to achieve quick economic growth to fight violent extremism and meet the social and economic challenges faced by the country.

He also welcomed EIB’s continuous support to the development process in Tunisia, expressing hope to see it further increase, in light of the start of the five-year development plan 2016-2020.

Escolano recalled that the EIB has allocated EUR 1.5 billion to Tunisia since the start of democratic transition in 2011.

The amount was used in carrying out new projects in vital sectors for the economy such as energy, infrastructure, education and social housing, besides the private sector.

The Prime Minister is making a visit to the Netherlands and Luxembourg from March 1 to 4.

Essid and the delegation accompanying him took part in a meeting with The Hague-based Eurojust (European Union’s Judicial Co-operation Unit).
