TUNIS, May (TAP) - Premier Habib Essid urged governors to devote two thirds of their working time to action on the ground and get closer to citizens.

He said, as he chaired Saturday the Regular Conference of Governors at El Aouina National Guard barracks, he is not satisfied with the performance of some governors.

He called upon them to take up fully their responsibilities in running the affairs of citizens and said he will “act against those who do not lend a listening ear to their concerns.”

Governors must have a full knowledge of the situation in the region, he underlined.

Essid also reminded that a Cabinet Meeting Friday endorsed a draft government decree on the subordination of the Directorate-General of Local Affairs to the Prime Ministry which will expand the prerogatives of governors and help them make decisions in the interest of citizens.

The Premier likewise invited governors to entertain good relations with deputies of their regions, national organisations and civil society and hold regular meetings to third end.

Addressing the meeting, Interior Minister Hedi Majdoub spoke about the general situation in the country. Development, Investment and International Co-operation Minister Yassine Brahim shed light on the local dimension in the five-year development plan (2016-2020).
