(TAP) - Prime Minister Habib Essid chaired, on Thursday afternoon in the Government Palace in Kasbah, an inner cabinet Meeting to look at ongoing preparations for the "Sfax Capital of Arab Culture 2016" event.

The meeting focused on objectives specific to this event aimed to highlight the improvement of Tunisia's culture and valorise the cultural wealth of the region. It also seeks to diversify and intensify programmes and cultural activities that underscore the cultural and heritage potential of this region.

These are peculiarities that characterise interior cities and neighbourhoods which are likely to integrate, as appropriate, culture in the process of comprehensive and sustainable development.

The meeting also reviewed the set of projects designed to improve cultural infrastructure in the city of Sfax. These projects concern, notably, the transformation of the Catholic Church into a media library and fitting out the "Chott el Krekna" to host cultural, ecological and leisure activities not to

mention the restoration and lighting of the medina walls and maintenance of the Husseinite school "Fondouk el Haddadine" (ironworkers’ souk).

The Prime Minister recommended the need to perfect programmes and take necessary measures likely to speed up the achievement of cultural infrastructure projects so as to be ready for this major event that will contribute to create a cultural and tourist momentum likely to impact positively on the economic situation of the country.
